Auburn University in Auburn has traditionally been known as one of the best engineering programs in the state, but it is also ranked among the top engineering programs in the country, according to the US News and World Report. The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa is also ranked among the top engineering schools in the country. The University of Alabama at Birmingham also ranks among the top universities for engineering in the country. All three of the top state universities in Alabama tend to be selective for their engineering students.

On-Campus Engineering Schools in Alabama

If you would prefer a less populous campus, smaller programs in engineering are also available in Alabama. Jacksonville State University is about one fourth of the size of the largest universities in Alabama and offers bachelor programs in electronics and manufacturing engineering. There are also private schools with engineering programs in Alabama. Samford University is a private Baptist college that offers a bachelor degree in engineering physics.

Top Engineering Employers in Alabama

Three of the top engineering companies in Alabama are Volkert Inc., Hargrove Engineers + Constructors and Thompson Engineering.

Volkert Inc. is an employee-owned engineering firm that provides services to local and municipal governments, state and federal agencies, and private industries. Volkert has branches in ten states, with the Alabama location housing 227 employees. In addition to having landscape architects and real estate specialists on their staff, they also utilize the services of construction, structural and civil engineers as well as several multi-disciplinary engineers. The Western Wake Freeway project and the Alabama State University Life Sciences Building are just two of their many projects.

Hargrove Engineers + Constructors is a full-service construction management and engineering firm that has more than 450 employees at its three Alabama locations. They provide services to various markets, including petroleum refining; oil and gas processing and transportation; pulp, paper and consumer products; power generation; and heavy manufacturing, among others. A large portion of their staff consists of civil, chemical and structural engineers.

Thompson Engineering is an architectural and engineering service provider covering Alabama and several other southeast states. Through collaboration with Watermark Design Group and Thompson Consulting Group, Thompson Engineers offers a wide range of engineering-based services, including surveying, civil engineering services, soil testing, architecture, geotechnical and construction management. There are about 200 employers at the Mobile location.
