The state of Illinois has 11 ABET accredited universities, which have over 60 different ABET-accredited engineering degrees. The ABET accreditation (Accrediting Board of Engineering and Technology) is the premium engineering accrediting body at the program level. Keep in mind that there are other forms of accreditation – regional accreditation, generally speaking, is the best, but national accreditation should suffice as well.

In all, there are 43 schools in Illinois with some form of an engineering program. These include subject areas such as aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, biological engineering, and numerous other engineering majors offered throughout the state.

As far as online engineering programs in Illinois, University of Illinois’s online programs offer the same degrees and certificates that a student could receive at the on-campus location in Urbana-Champaign. Their online program offers Masters of Computer Science and Masters of Science in Aerospace Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The online program for University of Illinois is geared toward working professionals and post-graduate engineers seeking to enhance their education.

Another university that offers online engineering programs is the Illinois Institute of Technology. Three Illinois companies utilizing engineers are Caterpillar, Inc., Delta Engineering, and HDR Engineering, Inc.

Caterpillar is a large corporation that designs, manufactures and sells engines, machinery and financial products. CAT is also a world leader in the manufacture of diesel and natural gas engines; locomotives; and construction and mining equipment. Of its 21,600 employees working at the Illinois facility, a large portion is manufacturing and mechanical engineers that draw up the designs for the machinery.

Delta Engineering is a business enterprise that offers services in construction management, engineering and surveying. Delta has less than 100 employers, mostly electrical and mechanical engineers, but provides services related to lighting and layout designs; plumbing and piping; residential and commercial piping; energy management; and architectural design services, among others.

HDR Engineering, Inc. is an engineering, architectural and consulting firm with more than 6,200 employees and six offices throughout Illinois. Utilizing an engineering staff of electrical, mechanical and structural design engineers, HDR designs and builds structures in many markets, including architecture, resource management, private land development and transportation.
