Florida Engineering Schools & Degrees

There are 28 accredited engineering schools in the state of Florida. The field of engineering takes many forms, and the programs at Florida's universities reflects this. The engineering schools are spread quite evenly throughout the state. No matter where prospective students live in Florida, it is safe to say that there is at least one, and probably multiple, engineering schools nearby.

With so many options to choose from, students who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering should research carefully before making a decision about which school to attend. Applying to several different engineering departments is a smart idea. This will allow prospective students to keep their options open.

Florida Engineering Colleges

The state’s larger universities, such as the University of Florida, offer a wide variety of engineering programs, including aerospace engineering, environmental engineering science, chemical engineering, and civil engineering.

North Florida and Florida State are located in the panhandle region, Central Florida and the University of Florida in Gainesville are in the middle of the state, and Florida Atlantic and the University of Miami are located in the south. The Miami – Coral Gables area has multiple options, including Miami-Dade College.

The University of Miami’s program also offers an array of options, including manufacturing engineering, computer engineering, and electrical engineering.

Florida Engineering Schools to Consider

Colleges include the Florida Institute of Technology, Bethune-Cookman University, Florida Atlantic, and the University of Miami. Florida State University and Florida A&M offer a jointly run engineering school. Types of degrees that are offered include bachelor’s, master’s, associates, and PHD’s.

Online Engineering Degree Options in Florida

Florida residents who want to save time and money by taking an online course are in luck. Florida International University offers both undergrad and graduate online engineering programs. These types of programs have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their convenience and relatively cheap tuition costs.

There are a wide variety of engineering bachelor degrees available in Florida. The University of Miami, Florida State University in conjunction with Florida A&M, Florida International are among the schools that offer this degree.

The aforementioned schools also offer master’s degrees. The University of South Florida has a master’s program as well in engineering management.

Top Engineering Employers in Florida

Three top Florida companies with engineers are Tech Data, Lockheed Martin, and Reynolds, Smith and Hills.

Tech Data is one of the world’s largest IT product distributors, helping companies like Apple, Samsung, Microsoft and HP bring their products to market. Tech Data also provides IT services and customer support to IT companies. The company has more than 9,000 employees worldwide and utilizes field sales and systems engineers through most their services.

Lockheed Martin is a worldwide aerospace company that researches, designs, builds and manufactures advanced technology equipment and services. Lockheed has about 112,000 employees and many contractors to do work for the U.S. government. They utilize mechanical, aerospace, civil and software engineers.

Reynolds, Smith and Hills is a large architecture, engineering and consulting firm that has designed, built and repaired many projects from high schools and moveable platforms to streetcar systems and cathedral roofs. Its almost 800 Florida employees consist of software, architecture, mechanical and civil engineers.
