While largely known for its schools of government and political science, the District of Columbia (D.C.) does have a limited number of accredited engineering programs. These programs are mainly found at Howard University (HU), George Washington University (GWU) and the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). They are accredited through the Accreditation Board of Engineering Technology which is simply known now as ABET.
Unlike states that have a number of cities the D.C. area is comprised of a collection of neighborhoods with their own distinct personalities. For example, those attending engineering programs at HU will spend a great deal of their time in the historic Shaw neighborhood where the university's campus is located.
Founded in 1821, GWU has been a fixture in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood since 1912. Alternately, engineering students at the UDC attend classes at the school's Van Ness campus in the North Cleveland Park neighborhood.

Washington DC Area Engineering Schools
The College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Science at Howard University has five academic departments that support various engineering areas of study.
The George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science has six engineering degree program options from which to choose. Additionally, the UDC provides students with a choice among three engineering degree programs.
Online Engineering Degrees Around DC
While there are no opportunities to earn an online engineering degree from an accredited program in the D.C. area, there are out-of-state programs and a number of traditional engineering degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate school levels from which to choose.
Undergrad Engineering Degree Options in DC
Students who want to launch exciting careers in engineering often start by earning an undergraduate degree in their chosen areas of interest. For instance, HU offers freshman and transfer students opportunities to earn Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in chemical, civil, computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Engineering students who choose to attend GWU can earn B.S. degrees in biomedical, computer, electrical, mechanical and systems engineering.
The UDC has four programs for those pursuing undergraduate engineering degrees. Students can earn B.S. degrees in civil, mechanical, electrical and electrical with an option to double major in computer engineering .
Grad School Engineering Degree Options in DC
All accredited D.C. engineering programs encourage students to increase their knowledge in their chosen field of study by offering a number of graduate engineering degree options. For example, HU has opportunities for students to earn Master of Science (M.S.) degrees in electrical, mechanical, chemical, and materials science, and civil and environmental engineering.
GWU’s advanced engineering degree options consist of M.S. degrees in biomedical, civil and environmental, computer, mechanical and aerospace, electrical, engineering management and systems engineering. The UDC offers a M.S. in Electrical Engineering.
