There are eight universities in Minnesota that offer accredited ABET engineering programs at the bachelor’s and master’s levels.
A student seeking engineering education in Minnesota has a rich source of outstanding programs, both at undergraduate and graduate levels, that will prepare him or her for a promising career in the rapidly changing work world of tomorrow.
The traditional disciplines of chemical, civil, computer, electrical, industrial and mechanical engineering are offered with modern emphases at two or more schools.
Online Engineering Degrees from Minnesota Universities
Walden University and Capella University, both based in Minneapolis, are the only online schools in Minnesota offering engineering-related degrees. There are no online degree programs in engineering in this state other than at Capella and Walden.
The University of Minnesota Twin Cities does provide continuing education courses in engineering through distance learning, and an undergraduate engineering student is permitted to take one course per semester online.

Top Cities in Minnesota for Engineering Education
The Twin Cities offer the widest opportunities for students pursuing engineering education. Besides University of Minnesota, there is University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, which offers two bachelor’s and four master’s degree programs. Capella University in Minneapolis offers an online bachelor of science program in information technology. Walden University in Minneapolis offers online programs in information technology at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels.
Top Engineering Degrees in Minnesota
The number of programs and degrees offered at these schools range, from 11 Bachelor’s and 15 Master’s programs at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, to a single bachelor’s degree program at Winona State University.
Electrical engineering at St. Cloud State University, at both bachelor’s and master’s levels, offers a global approach to engineering issues. Courses cover computer hardware and software development, circuits, analog and digital electronics, microprocessor systems, digital and wireless communications, solid state devices, electromagnetics, integrated circuit design, control systems and instrumentation.
Mechanical engineering at Minnesota State University, Mankato is offered at both bachelor’s and master’s levels. Students learn in state-of-the-art laboratories; courses cover the gamut of materials, design, systems, and dynamics involved in this complex field of engineering. MNSU is ranked among the best engineering schools among non-PhD granting universities in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.
Technological advances have brought new emphases in engineering applications and this is reflected in relatively new programs in Minnesota schools of engineering. There will be increased demand for engineers trained, for example, in biomedical engineering, systems engineering, environmental health and safety, and composite materials engineering.
Biomedical engineering integrates engineering activities with knowledge of the human body and an understanding of how it functions under conditions of health, disease or injury. At University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, the Biomedical Engineering Department is concentrating research in cardiovascular, neural, and cell engineering. Both undergraduate and graduate students have the advantage of learning activities linked with a major medical device industry in the city, and with a teaching hospital located adjacent to the department.
Systems engineering is an expanding field for advanced engineers who can design, develop and manage large complex systems in our modern world. This master’s level program was developed by University of St. Thomas at the request of local industry to address the increased complexity of the engineering world. Systems engineers often work in management positions and bridge engineering knowledge with non-engineering processes to solve problems.
Environmental health and safety is a high demand field which include occupational safety, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, risk management and environmental health. University of Minnesota, Duluth is the single Minnesota school that offers a master’s degree in this engineering specialty.
The composite materials engineering program at Winona State University aims to develop creative minds and innovation in their students for designing, fabricating and testing products made of composite materials. Students learn through applied research in collaboration with the composites industry and community. This is the only accredited undergraduate program in the United States that offers a bachelor of science degree in composite engineering.
Top Engineering Employers in Minnesota
Three of the top engineering firms in Minnesota are WSB & Associates Inc. Bolton & Menk Inc., and Short Elliot Hendrickson Inc.
WSB & Associates Inc. is a twin cities-based engineering group consisting of about 267 employees and 78 registered engineers, most of which are project engineers. They provide the following types of engineering services: transportation, civil, construction, ITS and structures, water/wastewater and municipal. WSB provides both design and consulting services and has worked projects like Weaver Lake road pavement, Chain of Lakes Park renovation, and I-94 concrete pavement.
Also twin city-based, Bolton & Menk Inc. is an engineering firm that has 81 registered engineering among the 245 employees. Bolton & Menk specializes in civil and transportation engineering, land surveying and landscape architecture. They not only design and build projects but also provide assistance with zoning laws and financing. Bolton & Menk has architecture, civil and mechanical engineers working on most of their projects.
Short Elliot Hendrickson Inc. is a metro-based and employee-owned engineering firm that offers various types of engineering services, including environmental, civil, transportation, water, wastewater, infrastructure and structural. More than half of its 276 employees are registered engineers.
