New Mexico has four schools of engineering that are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology ABET. The four schools of engineering are well placed to serve the state of New Mexico, with University of New Mexico located centrally in Albuquerque, Northern New Mexico College located north of Santa Fe in Espanola, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, 75 miles south of Albuquerque, and New Mexico State University located at the very south in Las Cruces.

New Mexico Engineering Colleges

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology at Socorro, New Mexico State University at Las Cruces, and University of New Mexico at Albuquerque have large engineering departments offering a number of undergraduate and graduate level programs. The fourth school, Northern New Mexico College, Española, was recently accredited by ABET for their bachelor’s degree programs in information technology engineering and mechanical engineering with a solar energy concentration.

Those interested in working with solar or alternative energy sources may want to look at Northern New Mexico College’s mechanical engineering program. Their practice-oriented program will prepare them to work in a variety of green technology engineering organizations, product design or manufacturing companies or agencies concerned with alternative energies.

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology was originally named New Mexico School of Mines and has 30 years of experience in producing petroleum engineers. With the increased activity in the United States and Canada for energy production, there will continue to be a high demand for petroleum and natural gas engineers. This program will train bachelor’s level students in the development, exploration, and conservation of oil and gas resources.

Engineering students who have a strong leaning toward science and mathematics may want to pursue a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics at New Mexico State University at Las Cruces. A degree holder of this program would either continue on to graduate studies and head toward research and academics or work in industry in the forefront of technology. The program is designed to develop a strong background in physics and its application to the disciplines of aerospace, chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering.

Nuclear engineering is an evolving field requiring professional specialty courses in radiation detection and protection, nuclear reactor theory and safety, thermal hydraulics, and nuclear systems design on a solid foundational background of mathematics, physics, chemistry and engineering.

The University of New Mexico at Albuquerque is well situated to offer programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate levels. Besides its own nuclear engineering laboratory, the program has access to advanced reactors and radiation equipment of Sandia National Laboratories, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Phillips Laboratory for instruction and research.

Online Engineering Degrees in New Mexico

The universities in New Mexico have established distance education programs to reach students remotely in this large state. New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology’s live, web-based courses allow remote students to participate in on-campus courses in one of their multimedia enabled classrooms. This has enabled off-campus students to earn master’s degrees in mechanical engineering, materials engineering and engineering management.

In other distance education provisions, the University of New Mexico offers master’s degrees online in computer engineering and electrical engineering through their UNM Statewide Online and Distance Education program. New Mexico State University has designed 30-credit online coursework programs to enable the working engineer to earn master’s degrees in electrical and in industrial engineering. Northern New Mexico College offers some technology courses online.

Aspiring engineering students are therefore well-served in New Mexico to undertake undergraduate or graduate programs in a variety of engineering disciplines. No matter where they are located, combinations of on-campus and off-campus programs are available for them to pursue a degree in an engineering specialty.
