There are several engineering programs offered in West Virginia, including two within the state college system. Due to the limited number of engineering programs in the state, you might consider looking for an online university, which can offer multiple benefits especially for prospective students that live in remote areas or adult learners that need to work while getting their education.
West Virginia Public Universities with Engineering Programs
West Virginia University is located in Morgantown, WV, a community of 30,000 located in North-Central WV. The campus of 913 acres serves 22,000 undergraduates and 6900 postgraduates, about a third residing on campus.
Recognized as one of US engineering's largest undergraduate programs, it excels as a preeminent graduate program, particularly in Petroleum Engineering.
The College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at WVU currently has 2200 undergraduates and 650 postgraduates enrolled in degree programs in seven Engineering Departments.

West Virginia University Institute of Technology, is located in Montgomery, within a half hour of Charleston, the state capitol with the largest urban population in the western part of the state at 51,000. The Montgomery campus comprises 200 acres in a city of less than 2000 people serving 1200 undergraduates, 90% of whom are from WV. About a third of students live on campus.
The Leonard C. Nelson College of Engineering serves 400 undergraduates in six Engineering Departments: Chemical; Civil; Computer Science and Information Systems; Electrical and Computer; Mechanical; and Engineering Technology.
Other Universities with Engineering Programs
Marshall University, headquartered in Huntington WV, offers a bachelor’s and a master’s in civil engineering through its College of Information Technology and Engineering via several campuses. Student population is about 10,000. Marshall University and West Virginia University are the only places for postgraduate studies in engineering in the state.
Bachelor’s degree containing components of engineering are offered by Shepherd University, Bluefield State College.
No distance learning opportunities within the two primary engineering schools exist now. Both WV state campuses are primarily residential. No specifics are available for Marshall.
American Public University System established a distance learning program and currently awards associate, bachelor, and master level college degrees. Academic headquarters are located in Charles Town WV. This online school is not available to West Virginia residents, but has over 110,000 students in its various distance learning programs. It offers one engineering degree, a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. It is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools beginning 2006 and has met rigid, continuing academic requirements.
It was first academically accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council in 1995. That credential was retired in 2012, presumably in deference to North Central’s credential.
